Requirements for a suitable window and location

Why do we sometimes ask for a photo?

Why this is important

A suitable window and location are crucial for ensuring the accuracy of your Telraam device's traffic counts. If the window and location do not meet all the requirements, the quality of the data may be compromised. Use the checklist below to verify if your window and location are suitable.

If you’re purchasing a Telraam and are unsure about your location and window, feel free to contact us at support@telraam.net. Please include your address and a photo taken from your window (facing the road, mimicking the Telraam's view). We’ll assist you in determining whether your location meets the criteria.

When registering as a candidate for a Telraam network, we also ask you to upload a photo. This allows us to assess whether your location is suitable. We check for visibility of the roadway and footpath and look for potential obstructions, such as balconies, fly-screens, shutters, or trees that could block the view.

Location and window requirements

1️⃣   Floor height: The window should not be on the ground floor (level 0). Ideally, it should be on the first floor (+1) or higher, with a minimum height of 3 meters.

2️⃣   Maximum distance from window to street is about 15 meters.

3️⃣   Minimum distance: The Telraam should not be too close to the road. This means that larger vehicles, such as vans, should fit entirely within the camera’s field of view. This can be challenging on narrow one-way streets without footpaths, especially if the street is less than 5 meters wide.

4️⃣   Clear view: The view from the window should be unobstructed. Ensure there are no trees, hedges, flags, fly screens, parked high sided vehicles or other objects that could block the camera or interfere with its ability to recognize moving vehicles.

5️⃣   No intersections: The camera should not capture intersections or crossroads in its field of view. This is too complicated for the algorithm to count objects.

6️⃣   Perpendicular: The window should face the street directly, at a 90-degree angle, rather than at a slant. Objects should move in and out of the frame from left to right, or vice versa. Avoid extraneous” movement - such as overlooking a car-park, or playground.

7️⃣  Power outlet: There should be a power outlet near the window to connect the Telraam device.

8️⃣ Cellular network connectivity (for Telraam S2-model)
The Telraam S2 uses a SIM card, so cellular network connectivity is required.

Additional requirements for the first Telraam V1-model:

9️⃣   WiFi connection: Ensure that there is a stable Wi-Fi connection at the window location.

🔟 No stationary traffic: Avoid locations where vehicles remain stationary for extended periods (e.g., over 30 seconds), such as near traffic lights or busy intersections.
